Super Lawyers … it’s official! Our Partners join the top 5% of lawyers in NY State

Well done guys! Anthony Acampora, Kenneth Silverman, Keith Frank and Gerard Luckman are among the top 5% of lawyers in New York State to be rated by Thompson Reuters as Super Lawyers.

Keith Frank joined us in May 2016 and is a first time recipient of the Super Lawyer accreditation. Keith (Co-Chair of our Labor and Employment Group) was also honored by the Nassau County Bar Association for his contribution in the Labor and Employment field.

In his over 25 years of practice, Keith has represented and counseled government entities, large, medium and small sized manufacturing companies, retail companies, financial institutions, educational institutions, hospitals, medical practices and professionals, service companies, apartment building cooperative boards, property management companies, title companies, real estate agents and not for profit entities.

Getting into the swing of fund raising with the Tourette Association of America

Having been rained off  in September, we returned to the wonderful Westchester Country Club on October 24th for the annual Tourette Association of America Golf Classic.  It was a fun – windy – day followed cocktails and dinner.

We took our photo experience fund raising team, capturing pictures of all the teams as they played and relaxed after the event.  The final fund raising count isn’t in yet (we’re tracking downloads too), but it looks as if we raised a healthy amount just from everyone playing along, saying cheese and having some fun.

Cradle of Aviation host 14th Annual Air & Space Gala

It doesn’t get any cooler than Space and all things related to it.  The Cradle of Aviation Museum hosted the 14th Annual Air & Space Gala and in attendance was General Charles M. “Charlie” Duke Jr. Apollo 16 Astronaut who  collected the Spirit of Discovery Award. General Duke was the 10th man to walk on the Moon.  Anthony Acampora was there in support of the Museum and the many aerospace and defense companies based here on Long Island.  Anthony is a board member of ADDAPT  (The Aerospace and Defense Diversification Alliance in Peacetime Transition) whose mission is to sustain and grow manufacturing capability and capacity in the region by serving as a strong advocate and a strategic growth partner for aerospace and defense organizations here on Long Island.

On October 7th, 2016, throughout America, Manufacturers, Manufacturing Associations and Government bodies sponsored a series of events as part of Manufacturing day (MFG DAY).

MFG DAY was just one component of a much larger and longer term initiative that seeks to address common misconceptions about manufacturing.  By working together during and after MFG DAY, manufacturers will begin to address the skilled labor shortage they face, connect with future generations, take charge of the public image of manufacturing and ensure the ongoing prosperity of the whole industry.

MFG DAY was the rallying point for manufacturers to come together to address their collective challenges so they can help their communities and future generations thrive.  Doors were opened and important conversations started; it was a huge success.

The Manufacturing Consortium of Long Island (MCLI) was an active participant in MFG DAY and hosted a Gala in honor of the day. The Gala was a sold out event and representatives from industry and government came together to celebrate manufacturing.  Congresswoman Kathleen Rice presented a number of commendations from State officials and Vikrum Aiyer – Chief of Staff of the US Patent and Trademark Office, delivered the keynote speech.

MCLI are passionate advocates for manufacturers of all types here on Long Island.  Their mission is simple; to help sustain and grow Long Island’s industrial base.  Their tireless work is helping to raise the profile of Long Island companies both at home and overseas.  Anthony Acampora (Partner-in-Charge) – one of the founding board members of this exciting organization – provides counsel and support to both the organization itself and emerging businesses throughout Long Island.

Robert Ansell to lecture to New York Judges & Court Attorneys

November 3, 2016.  Robert will deliver the lecture ‘Alter Ego Doctrine/Piercing the Corporate Veil for New York Judges and their Court Attorneys.’

Robert Ansell (Partner) has been asked to speak at The Judicial Institute’s upcoming lecture for Judges and Court Attorneys on piercing the corporate veil.  Robert is a regular speaker/lecturer and has delivered many CLE credit courses to attorneys and we’re thrilled that has been asked to participate in this program.  The Judicial Institute  provides statewide education and training for the judges and justices of the New York State Unified Court System . The Institute provides a forum for judicial scholarship that includes continuing education seminars and conferences, as well as cooperative education programs with other state and federal judicial systems and related endeavors.

Succession Planning – the time to start is NOW!

Succession Planning – Key to the Future Success of Your Organization

Anthony Acampora, Partner-In-Charge, moderated a panel discussion that explored the value of succession planning; when to do it, who should do it and what it should look like.

He kicked off the discussion with a simple question.

“When is the best time to plant a tree?”  The room collectively shrugged its shoulders.

“20 years ago.”

“When is the second best time to plant a tree?”  The room, once again, blanked.

“Right now! The same is true of Succession Planning, if you haven’t started, the time to begin is right now. The sooner the better.”

The analogy was clear, the room sat up and took notice.  The panelists brought a wealth of experience in both general business and succession planning to forum.

The discourse was lively and informative with active exchanges between the panel and audience.  The panel explored both sides of the succession planning coin and clearly illustrated why every business – no matter its age or size – needs a solid succession plan in place.

The question of just how salable is a business is without a robust, always up to date plan.  Steve Ramerini provided a simple way for the group to know for sure.

He posed this question, “How long could your business operate without you?”  He stated that if that time was less than six months, there probably wasn’t a business to sell.

The panelists used real world examples to illustrate why failing to act now can have dire consequences down the road.

Anthony brought the discussion to a close with a succinct summary of why Succession Planning is so vital.

“Every business has a unique set of family, leadership operational and industry specific issues.  There is no set formula for business or planning.  But there is one universal truth that applies to every business.  The day before you start your business, is the same day you should start thinking about your exit.”
